CLIMATE CHANGE IS DISPROPORTIONATELY IMPACTING THE WORLD’S MOST VULNERABLE
According to the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Africa is expected to warm at 1.5x the rate of the global average leading to increasingly severe droughts, floods and storms; threatening people’s livelihoods, their health and exacerbating the pressures on Africa’s biodiversity.
Nature itself provides an incredible opportunity to address these challenges and Africa can show the way towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious energy transition.
Recognising this potential, POWERING AFRICA | RECHARGING CONSERVATION is creating paths to Energy Access in rural communities that improve quality of life, promote climate resilient development and strengthen community ties to protected areas.
MISSION

Deforestation and soil erosion are Africa’s largest contributors to climate change. Some six hundred million people in Sub-Saharan Africa are not connected to a regular source of electric power. This number is set to double by 2050. How these people transition to clean sources of energy will have a profound impact on Africa’s economic development, its biodiversity and the rate of climate change globally.
PA|RC is targeting the most vulnerable and hard-to-reach rural populations with bespoke energy solutions that address context-specific needs while promoting broader conservation goals.

Rural communities, often lacking access to clean energy and struggling with food and water security, are both the most vulnerable to the impact of climate change and at the forefront of the human-wildlife conflict.
PA|RC is working with local stakeholders to create innovative renewable energy solutions around access to water, agriculture, food production and education; encouraging more sustainable land management practices, generating diversified climate resilient livelihood schemes, and ultimately improving quality of life.

Functioning ecosystems are both more biodiverse and climate resilient. The success of conservancies/protected areas and their neighbouring communities are inextricably linked. Where the welfare of communities is threatened, the Human Wildlife Conflict is exacerbated. Conversely, flourishing conservancies can provide livelihood opportunities, community services and a more climate resilient ecosystem.
PA|RC is facilitating the Renewable Energy Transition for conservancies to create significant durable cost savings that improve the financial health of these protected areas. Conservancies, in turn, are integral partners in forging durable relationships and co-managing the PA|RC community energy solutions.

Many conservancies and protected areas have realised that, with mounting population pressure, only if surrounding communities are invested in their work will the mission to protect Africa’s biodiversity succeed. Energy Access projects provide an incredible opportunity for Conservancies to quite literally empower their neighbours to take ownership of life changing energy infrastructure in the name of Conservation.
PA|RC is deploying community surveys, thoughtful governance structures (through existing community groups and the representation of women and minorities) and continued mentoring to ensure that communities ultimately become managers and owners of their own energy infrastructure- all in the name of conservation.
PA|RC’s accountability promise: Transparent accounting with 100% of its profits reinvested into its community energy access solutions.
